LOST Episode Breakdown 4.11 'Cabin Fever'

This weeks episode of LOST was right up their with some of the best. Leading right into next weeks episode and part 1 of the season finale. The only downside to this episode was the inclusion of Keamy, which has to be the most hated character by me since Biff from the back to the future series. I can't wait to see some island karma come his way. For those of you who have seen the episode, or are looking for a written breakdown, push the button. Anyone who has yet to see this weeks episode go to ABC.com and watch before reading this to avoid any spoilers.

Execute

Alright! Wow what an episode. Following LOST, lets start from the beginning. No really all the way at the beginning, back some 40 years ago about 3 months before John Locke was even due. That's right, this week we are greeted by a flashback, how retro for LOST. Apparently their was more mystery concerning the crippled box man during his lifetime. In fact this is information John is not yet privy to, making it all the more juicy.

"Everyday it's getting closer, going faster than a roller coaster." Truer words couldn't have been chosen. The LOST writers seem to have a knack for picking groovy songs from the past to suit the episodes needs. This line represents the looming finale which is coming next week, as well as the pace of the show. Not only is this season coming to an end, but the answers we want and the closure that many of us so patiently wait for are is on its way and developing right before our eyes. Not only do we get to see the young rebellious Emily Locke get blindsided by a car before meeting the famous Tom Sawyer aka Anthony Cooper we find out John just like a certain favorite other of ours was also born prematurely. Seems like Ben and Locke have more in common each day.

Google Maps Anyone?

Not only was Emily blindsided, but so were the viewers. It seems that Ben after showing his first true human emotions, has accepted his new role and Johns. While Hurley, Ben and Locke are walking around aimlessly, thinking each one was following the other. Not that this would be the first time we have seen survivors lost in the jungle, but all of a sudden the secretive man behind the curtain, the one malevolent and creepy Henry Gale, is as confused and lost as the rest of them.

Stepping out of the jungle and back to our friends on the freighter I although not surprised am happy to see Micheal very much alive and well. At this point I am beginning to really like the captain Gualt since he seems to want to help the survivors of 815. Unfortunately for him, Keamy came around and tried with no avail to put a bullet in his head. Although Micheal cringed in fear, I have a feeling there was a part of him that wished keamy could finish the job that the universe wouldn't allow him to. Though just like the pawn shop pistol Micheal bought with Mr Paiks watch the gun simply did not fire.
After 12 years you'd think that tree would stay down?

Back on the island we see locke waking up to the sound of chopping wood. He is visited by the ghost of horace goodspeed. The man responsible for ben even being on the island in the first place. The only thing is, we saw Horace die in the purge 12 year ago, which means we now have a date of 1992 for the purge. In a ghostly scene reminiscent of psychological suspense thriller 1408 the ghost brought locke a message in a repetitive display of chopping down the same tree over and over. The only disappointing part about this was when locke woke up and it was just a dream, although it did not cheapen the event. Especially when ben gave locke an almost nostalgic look and said "I used to have dreams too" in a tone which made him appear disappointed and longing for the days of his power.

If that scene with John Locke wasn't enough to quench your thirst for mythology, then you are in luck. In the next scene we find the young emily locke visiting baby john in the hospital. We find out that although he was 3 months premature, he also managed to survive diseases and viruses that could ravage a healthy adult. Almost in an eerie way similar to micheals ability to be unable to die the nurse's have claimed locke to be a miracle baby, also referencing an older senile emily locke when she tells john he was immaculately conceived. Which is all a bunch of great analysis, because not only do we see emily decline to hold baby john and run out of the room, she decides she can not raise him and her mother inquires about adoption. Which would have been enough for me, but the LOST team seemed set on really delivering by placing none other than the ageless Richard Alpert outside of the room looking in through the glass window. YES! He is back, and we will get to what is going on next, but I have to say I am ecstatic about Nestor's return to LOST.

So we once again return to the 3 amigos trekking through the woods towards or away from jacobs elusive cabin. The fact is none of them know, so locke brings them on a detour where hurley gets to meet the once great DHARMA initiative. We also get to see be's reaction as he is looked at as a murderer by locke and he explains to hurley that it was not his decision. Not only that but he also tells hurely that jacob, gave him the orders and was the true leader of the others.

My new Cell phone wallpaper! Love this creepy doodle.

What's better than seeing baby locke.. KID LOCKE! Actually not really, since he lived in a foster home with what didn't appear to be the world's best mom. Not only that but he was quite the quiet child who even at a young age loved his games and was picked on by others around him, mirroring his future self before the island. So how can this scene even be relevant? Well just ask Richard Alpert, who came to visit young locke. Although the foster mother does not know his true intentions, she gives locke a stern warning to be on his best behavior, like a puppy at a pet store, young locke sits wide eyed and hopes to be chosen. Before they sit down with one another, richard makes a startling discovery, well not to him, but to us viewers it was quite the creepy image.
Choose your destiny..

After viewing young lockes crayon drawing of the smoke monster looking visiting him or even attacking someone they sit down to talk. Richard pulls out a collection of items and asks young john which items belong to him. "To keep!" young locke explains with a surprised and cheerful glee. "No" Richard says, which of these are already yours. So lets just take a look.

We have the compass, A vial with what I assume to be island sand, the comic book, The book of laws a baseball mit and a knife. First he takes the sand, then he picks up the compass and seems to examine it, until finally he pulls the knife. In a very disappointed and almost angered way Richard takes his things exclaims that this was a mistake and leaves. Although this does not mean as Ben put it in season 3 "He is not who we thought he was", it just simply means young locke is not ready yet. Although I suspect richard can wait a few years, it should be that long for a man who does not age.

Orchid Station Logo!

Going back to our frieghter folk we see keamy and gualt in the captains room, each have a key which keamy took from gualt to open the secondary mission. Apparently Charles Widmore knows more about this island than anyone out side of it. Keamy says Widmore told him this is were Ben would go and what to do. the front cover of the book has the Orchid station logo on it, so for anyone who expects the temple or jacobs cabin, sorry but the answer was right their on the show. So now we know they expect ben to head to the Orchid Station and are going their themselves, as well as have a plan to torch the entire island.

Sayid leaves to save his friends one last time

Right after this we see captian gualt trying to help Sayid and Desmond, I knew gualt was good! Sayid suggests that the only way to save their selves and friends is to get them off the island, so he gets the captain to give them the zodiac raft. Hmm are we going to be seeing a nautical escape from the island? Could be! Well just see next week although, I hope the writers didn't forget about desmonds vision of claire and the helicopter. Though, until she dies there won't be any reason to discredit desmonds vision either.

So back in the jungle the fearless leader John Locke finds this dream guest stars body in the DHARMA crypt and pulls out a map. A map leading to none other than jacobs cabin! Not only do they set off on the road to the mysterious cabin, but John manipulated hurley into following them by thinking he had the freedom to leave but was less safe doing so. Ben recognizes this and congratulates him saying "Not bad John" although locke states he's not ben and not like him, Ben gives him a sinister and even jealous look saying, "No you are not".

Back to the past, we see the nerdy John Locke once again trying to fit into a society which rejects him. He has an apparent gift for science as founded by his science fair project and his mind, which seems contradictory to the man of faith we know him for. Alpert tried to once again recruit John to the island using summer camp as a cover for the others to get a hold of him. We also see John is not yet ready to accept that he is different and he holds onto these ideas of normalcy and sports everything he is not. Until he finally breaks and says his classic line "Don't tell me what I can't do!", in classic style.

Meanwhile on the freighter, good old frank lapidus pays our friend Micheal a visit. Asking him why he didn't tell him he was a survivor, obviously Micheal did not trust him, although Frank for being a so called conspiracy theorist has a hard time believing their boss put that plane on the bottom of the ocean. Micheal explains that frank can not bring them back to the boat because if he does then Keamy will kill everyone on the island! Talk about a great lead in for the finale. If we thought the others rag tag team of guys battling our oceanic survivors was epic, Keamy and his small army are going to be the battle of a lifetime.

Looks like... something....

Taking Micheal down to the engine room, we spot keamy being packed up for the mission ahead with a small electronic device on his arm. A tracker? An electromagnetic defense mechanism, or sonic grenade weapon to help fight off the smoke monster? Those are my guesses.

Abaddon Devils Advocate or Orderly

One more flashback for our friend Mr Locke. It's John later in life, during rehabilitation. He is being wheeled by none other than our mysteriously creepy friend Abbadon. I suspect abbadon is playing the devils advocate to Alpert since he not only suggest to locke that he take a walk about, setting up his reason for going to Sydney, but tells him all he needs is his Knife and his Wits. Pulling him in the other direction than Richard wanted, as we clearly saw his disappointment in young lockes choosing of the knife. Reaffirming my idea that Widmore's team has a polar opposite goal of Jacob and Bens.

Afterwards, taking head of his warning, Frank stands up to Keamy and says he won't take them to the island. Only moments before we saw omar mention how it was weird that the people on the island said he washed ashore with his throat slit. Keamy makes a very strong argument by telling frank he will die, frank explains to keamy that if he dies, there is no way he is getting back to the island. So Keamy slits the throat of Doc Ray. Then when captain Gualt steps in, keamy shows him the device on his arm and has gualt killed. So frank readies the chopper to spare the rest of the crew and himself. Although that is not all he does, as the Helicopter passes the island he drops a phone so they can track them and either follow or stay clear of Keamy. Personally, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them. Although I loved seeing Juliet's concern for jack, since those two belong together, and make a much better couple than kate and jack.

For a dead guy, he sure seems to get around.

So the final scene arrives. Hurely finds the cabin, Ben passes the torch to John by stating his time is over, and he and hurley elect to stay outside. Inside Locke finds one of my all time favorites, Christian Sheppard! Who is not only keeping up his exercise with visits around the island and off the island, but is now even chatting it up with locke. After exchanging pleasantries and explaining he speaks on behalf of jacob, christian asks John if he knows why he is their. He answers by saying that he was chosen to be. More creepy than the remark by christian that he was absolutely right, was the creaking from claires chair. She not only greets john but tells him not to worry. This puzzles him severely. Christian tells him there is no time for answering his questions right now because Keamy is on his way to the island and none of that will soon matter.

Need a moment?

In a very light hearted scene, meant to both break the current tension and give our minds a rest we see one of the funniest calm moments shared by Ben and Hurley. The two of them have great chemistry together due to their total opposite characteristics. Hurleys lax mood and calm unwrapping of the candy bar is unsettling by the lonesome grimace on Ben who accepts half from him. New best friends forever! With charlie gone could we see Ben step in! not likely, but I just couldn't help but laugh during this scene.

Move the.. what?

Finally, after killing time with that scene so we don't get the specifics on what went down in the cabin locke emerges. Instead of the normal vague statement leaving us to wonder what he was told, the episode ends with locke saying. "He wants me to move the island" Cut to black. Put that up for two on my theories which were affirmed tonight. See you all next week!
